Coming of age or Bildungsroman is a motif in this story. Jim, Jonnie, Sally and Daniel are very young to be on their own. The older three siblings face serious repercussions if they don't face up to the responsibilities of their roles in the family. Each realizes this and each faces the responsibilities with varying degrees of maturity.
