Who is Captain Ahab from Moby Dick and what is their importance?

Captain Ahab is the acting captain of the Pequod during its three-year voyage. Ahab’s obsession with killing the white sperm whale drives the major conflict of the story. Ahab had lost his leg to the whale and his obsessive vendetta against it throws the crew into conflict as well.
