The nature of individual identity is a recurring idea in the story. Both previously discussed themes (the Hero's Journey and the differences between appearance and reality) are tied to the third. This is the book's contemplation of the idea of individual identity and independence. A key component of Jacob's particular version of The Hero's Journey is that he moves from having a life defined by his parents (particularly his mother and her wealth) to living a life clearly defined by his own choices.
