The narrator's mother, Florina De Dios, is the daughter of Italian merchants. She married the narrator's father and had only one child, whom she doted on for the rest of her life. Over the course of the story, Florina makes her son promise to get married and have a daughter..... a daughter he will name after her. The narrator hoped to keep his promise, but when it came time to get married, he couldn't go through with it. The narrator prefers prostitutes to the idea of marriage.
