Medea receives a visit from Aegeus, King of Athens, who has returned from a trip to the oracle where he inquired about how to have children as he is still childless. He doesn’t understand the oracle’s message, so Medea offers to use spells in her knowledge to make his wife conceive, on the condition that Aegeus grants her refuge in Athens. Aegeus agrees, but Medea must reach his lands on her own.
