How does race effect Maniac and Mars Bar's relationship?

Initially, Mars Bar bullies Maniac regularly. He antagonizes Maniac because he is the only white kid in a black neighborhood. Maniac, on the other hand, stands up for himself each and every time, and in the end, Mars Bar comes to respects Maniac for his bravery.
