I definitely think that Maniac Magee respected everyone, including himself and it shows in the way he treats people of different race and social standing equally in the time period that this story takes place. He relates with outcasts and befriends almost everybody he meets because of the mutually respectful relationships that he forms. This respect he shows for everyone despite differences is especially important because of the blatant inequalities of this time. It impacted whole communities. For example: Maniac Magee bites off a chunk of Mars' chocolate bar and even on the spot where Mars himself had put his lips. This shocked everybody but Maniac because he rightly believes that everyone is the same on the inside.
