R. K. Narayan, the writer, has the distinction of being a native of Southern India, but a writer in English. He and his characters also speak the local language Tamil, but the stories are originally written in English. The vocabulary, especially in the first two sections of story, tends to be simple and straight-forward with occasional use of Indian words, usually in italics, in the text.
