In the novel, Malgudi Days, a boy and his father are able to earn money with the help of Naga, a snake, whom they pretend to charm. In other words, they earn money as snake charmers. However, one day the boy sees a monkey in a tree and he and his father are able to catch it. Once they tame it, they are able to make more money with the monkey than they did with Naga. After this, Naga refuses to work with them any more, and grows lazy. The boy ends up on his own because his father takes the monkey and moves in with a woman in the town, abandoning the boy with the snake. In the end, the boy ends up wishing that the snake were dead.
