Maggie, a Girl of the Streets was written by Stephen Crane of Red Badge of Courage acclaim (he hadn't written that one yet, of course). In general, this short story is about a girl, named Maggie, who is growing up in a bowery in Manhattan. Her father is an alcoholic and is often in drunken rages when Maggie and her brothers are home. Later, when he dies, Maggie begins working in a cuff making factory where she meets Pete. Not too much longer after that, she agrees to run away with him to get away from her mother. Things don't go well for Pete and Maggie and in a very short while Pete meets someone else and is discarded. When Maggie ties to go home to her mother, she is turned away. She turns to the streets and becomes a prostitute. After she is killed by one of her clients, the news gets back to her mother who feels remorseful and forgives Maggie.
