Friedrich Engels was a German theorist who, alongside Karl Marx, was the founder of communism. Engels co-authored The Communist Manifesto with Engels. His influence On Breton's ideas in Mad Love stem primarily from his work The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State, which Breton examines in Section 5. In The Origin of the Family, Engels examines the history of the family through the lens of class relations. arguing this has shaped the rise of the modern family. This pairing is a monogamous one, but one based on property, not love, and one in which women are subjugated.
