How does the author use foreshadowing in Love Takes Wing?

In the beginning of the novel, Belinda feels left behind in her small prairie town as her younger nieces get married and move away. An accident causes a rift in the family - a situation that causes Belinda much distress. This foreshadows commitments that Belinda is expected to make that she doesn't want to.
