The feverish desire to own real estate on the part of Eliza in the novel is an indication of what was going on in the town and is a foreshadowing of the last chapters. The book is about the changes that take place in the life of a young man as he goes out into the world, so the unrest in Thomas Wolfe's emotional life may very well reflect the atmosphere of the town he grew up in.
