Acceptance is a recurring idea in the story. Although not all humans in this novel are associated with the hate group, the Fellowship of the Sun, many of the humans who have only recently learned about the existence of vampires do not understand them and therefore are fearful of them. Many humans shun the vampires, not only because they do not know what to expect from them but because they are afraid of anything different from themselves. Portia and Andy Bellefleur are a part of this group. Portia is frightened of Bill Compton, Sookie's vampire lover, because she is frightened of what he might do to her when they are alone.
