Ferdinand de Saussure was a French linguist. He revolutionized the field of linguistics and had a profound impact on the study of literature for all subsequent literary theory. Saussure's linguistic theory was known as "structuralist linguistics", as rather than examining the actual content of language as it was used, it focused on the structure of language itself.
