Elsie is one of Mary's relatives. She lives by the old traditions, and as a result, Mary seeks her out when she rebels against her grandmother's Catholic beliefs and teachings. Elsie is considered a turtle woman, which is symbolic of strength, good health, and long life. She is also a well respected medicine woman.
