In Chapter Eleven, Connie discovers a cradle and mentions that she and Clifford might one day have need of it. During this interaction, Connie and Mrs. Bolton have an intimate conversation about marriage and intimacy. This conversation would be considered strange because of the distinctive differences in the women's social standing. For a moment, these women are able to set aside class distinction and simply be women.
