The gothic image of the ruined mansion which hides a mysterious —even hideous —secret is meant to convey a sense of the limits of human endeavor in the face of nature's relentless entropy and to remind readers of the fleetingness of mortal existence and to hint at the existence of a supernatural realm beyond.
