The characters of Knowledge of Angels continually raise questions of whether knowledge of God makes people morally superior to those who don't believe in God. The island runs on the assumption that people need religion to keep them from sinning and to motivate them to follow the law, but the book repeatedly gives examples of island residents who sin.
