Like all of Shakespeare’s plays, King Lear is written in Early Modern English, although his complex sentence structure and use of (now) obsolete words, often leads students to think they are reading Old or Middle English. Shakespeare used his immense creativity and imagination to play with language, molding it into an immediately recognizable style.
