What does The Rug represent?

This rug is a symbol of both Lanny’s life both before and after her father was discovered to be a murderer. In Lanny’s life prior to the murder conviction, the rug was a fun fixture that Lanny played on. She realizes that her life had been turned into a nightmare when she saw that her father had incorporated the rug into his torture chamber. The rug holds even more bad memories when she sees a replica of it in Graham’s torture chamber.
