Over the course of the war, Vyry becomes a mother, she attempts to escape (she is returned), she beomes a house slave, and then she later takes over the kitchen. John promises that she will be free upon his death, but she doesn't believe that his wife will honor that promise. She does not, however, escape when the Union Army approaches like the majority of the slaves..... she stays behind, and she goes out into the field to plany much needed food. She plants, and she plows, and she takes care of the house. After the war is over, she leaves with Innis.
