Another theme is success through determination. The author uses this story to prove that a person can accomplish their dreams in the face of adversity, if the person works hard. This theme comes out most clearly with Carl Brown. He faces challenges, both self inflicted and circumstantial, as he pursues his law degree. Despite dwindling finances and the coming baby, Carl continues to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer.
