Hesse uses long paragraphs and often condenses many events into a short space.... and he sometimes uses many sentences to expand upon a small point. In the first part of the book, Hesse seems to be writing a formal memoir; the second part is written like a novel. These shifts in style require close attention from the reader in order to follow the flow of the entire book.
