In Section III, Book II, Fielding uses the argument in the alehouse, as well as Mrs. Slipslop's arrival to emphasize his theme of seeing the truth beyond false appearances. These events, in addition to the lady in the coach's allusion, foreshadow the tale of Leonora which is begun in Chapter Four.
