The main conflict in the novel, Johnny Got His Gun, is Joe's struggle to come to terms with his injuries. The war has left him without legs, without a face, and without the ability to communicate. Over the course of the novel, we see him not only struggle to overcome the physical damage but to find a way to communicate with the outside world as well.
