Aside from the bird imagery is the imagery of other worldly creatures such as sprites, elves, etc... that several characters use to reference Jane. Additionally, there is the pervading gothic 'feel' to the novel in the use of the castle, the gloomy and foreboding setting, the 'red room' and the wife in the attic.
