The Judge asks “Why would a man from such a distinguished family and with such a fine education choose to live as you do?” Vonnegut explains that the meaning behind the answer, “Why, Because of the Sermon on the Mount, sir,” directly pertains to "the meek shall inherit the earth,"..... something the defendant took to heart.
