Christine Johnson is employed as the principal of the Sojourner Truth School. She is described as beautiful, intelligent, and sophisticated. Over the course of the novel, Cross falls in love with her. He does not, however, act on his feelings because Christine is a married woman. In the end, the two become close friends, particularly after Christine's husband is killed, and she is kidnapped. Cross, of course, saves the day.
