He acts as a catalyst for the characters (Minerva and Dede). He is a young charasmatic doctor with revolutionary ideas. In fact, his ideas about freedom and equality and human rights put him squarely in danger. As he flees the country he asks, via letter, Minerva to run away with him. She never gets the letter, though, because Dede destroys it.
