Eleanor Wade is John's mother who describes a great deal about John's relationship with his father. According to Eleanor, John's father drank almost constantly though she insists that he did not physically abuse John. The fact that she makes the point of specifying physical abuse seems to indicate that there might have been some mental or emotional abuse.
