Who is Duke Gareth from In the Hand of the Goddess and what is their importance?

Duke Gareth is Gary's father. He is the commander of the troops until he is injured, an injury sustained as a result of Roger's magic before the battle. Roger takes over the Duke's command and leads Jonathan and the others on the field.
