The main conflict in the story is an inner conflict, though the narrator and her friend experience different conflicts..... together. The narrator tries to come to grips with what she can do for her friend.... to fulfill the role her friend has chosen her for. The dying woman is torn apart by the thought of dying..... the fears, the inappropriate laughter, the journey itself.
