what is going on at the beginning of book 6?

The gods have withdrawn from the battles, leaving the Achaeans and Trojans to fight without interference. The Greeks are doing much better without the gods and have been dominating the Trojans.
The gods have removed themselves from this part of the battle and the tide turns against Hector and his family. Paris and Hector reenter the battle.
