Who is Menelaus from The Iliad and what is their importance?

Menelaus is the king of Sparta and Helen's husband. Menelaus is said to be an average guy, an average ruler, and an average warrior. None-the-less, he is married to the most beautiful girl in the world, and he cannot stand back and allow Paris make him seem the fool.
