Erikson was a Neo-Freudian. He was also friend to and patient of Anna Freud, Sigmund Freud's daughter. While Erikson's devotion to Freudian orthodoxy was most prominent early in his career, Freudian psychological theories influenced him throughout his life. Because of this, Freud is arguably Identity, Youth and Crisis's second most important person.
