The novel's setting in the area around the polar icecap, the earthquake, and the subsequent tsunami that breaks a large section of the icecap off where the expedition is working (and camping), leave the team stranded on a floating iceberg that contains sixty bombs set to go off in less than twelve hours with a storm heading their way that might hinder any attempts at rescue. The conflict is clear and the reader already doubts there will be any saving this group from impending doom.
