Who is Kowalski from Ice Hunt and what is their importance?

Joe is an American navy seaman who doesn't like people touching his things. While his demeanor is gruff and he complains loudly about situations that don't appeal to him, he is steadfastly loyal and dependable. Despite constant obstacles, he keeps coming back to the aid of those around him. He escapes with Jenny after the Russians capture them when they are on their way to the Ice Station, and while he's grousing about the situation, he still never gives up, and never backs down. He gets soaked more than once, is chased by Grendels, left for dead outdoors and puts his life on the line countless times. He's a true Navy seaman through and through.
