The Lovers of Teruel were a young couple from two different social classes, who wanted to be married. Diego was poor and in the hopes Isabel's father would agree to their marriage, he asked that he give him five years to amass a fortune. Her parents agreed but counted five years down to the day, and when Diego didn't show with his fortune, they immediately made plans to marry Isabel off to another man. Diego returned the day of Isabel's wedding..... but Isabel would not even afford him a kiss. Diego died at her feet; Isabel died at Diego's funeral. The couple was buried together at Teruel.
