Emily's word play appears rooted in Yiddish (shoogily—meshugah) and there is
something archetypically talmudic in her fascination with riddles (for which a younger sibling gets recognition) "that was my riddle, Mother, I told it to Susan...," foreshadowing the leitmotif Olsen will orchestrate in Tell Me a Riddle.
