One example of discrimination occurs when the white men come to speak at Maya's eighth grade graduation. The men speak to the students as though they are meant to be nothing if not athletes. It is strongly suggested that if they are not successful at sports, they will not amount to anything. Another example of discrimination occurs when Annie attempts to take Maya to a white dentist. He is disrespectful and cruel. He refuses to work on her tooth, merely because she is black.
