Why did the man hate David, while at the same time looking after him? Why did the man let David escape?  

The man hated all those in the concentration camp for whatever reason they were held there. We might infer that David was a Jew, but that is never once mentioned in the text. We know David's mother was arrested, we know that the "man" is his father, and thus, this is the same reason he helps the boy escape.
