How does David act on the “lesson of the barred door”?

David reacts to the lesson of the "barred door" by avoiding houses. He determines never to enter a house. Later in the novel, David sends a letter to Carlo, as he was determined to not forget the lesson..... he had entered Carlo's home, and he wanted to respond to Carlo's parent's letter in the paper.
