How does the 'little psalm angel' serve to make the reader dislike Brocklehurst further?

This scene happens in Chapter 4 of Jane Eyere when the reader is introduced to Brocklehurst in all his splendor. He claims to be a very good christian, but is anything but that. The Little Psalm Angel incident illusrates this quite well. They are discussing the Psalms and Jane (being Jane) says that she does not like it the best of all of the books in the Bible. He reprimands her and says that he has many young children whom he works with who would rather have a Psalm over food (choosing verses over food). Of course, this is because, as we learn, that Brocklehurst considers food to be a luxury and not a necessity for his charges.
