How does the author use foreshadowing in House Made of Dawn?

Early in the first chapter, we come to learn that Abel's father was not of the local tribe, something that made both Abel and his family 'foreign' in the community. Through this revelation, we come to see that Abel has never really belonged, and it foreshadows the fact that later in life he will be an outcast in both his town and in Los Angeles.
