In the novel's first chapters, Pancho is arrested and brought before a judge, where he claims both identities, saying that he wants to be a holy card model (which Dybek foreshadows earlier in the story by saying that the nuns thought Pancho looked like a saint, such as St. Sebastian or Juan de la Cruz), but that he is also a captain, which is a street gang title.
