Stanley Yelnats is the main character in the novel, Holes. He is described as an overweight, middle-school boy from a poor but loving family. Stanley is also bullied by his classmates. One day, while walking under an underpass, a pair of gym shoes drops down on Stanley and knowing that the shoes would be helpful to his dad, he takes them home. Stanley is then accused of stealing the shoes and unable to defend himself, the courts send him to Camp Green Lake. Stanley's life at the camp, and the relationships he builds with the other boys, results in a stronger body, and, for the first time in his life, a true friendship with a boy named Zero.
