Who is Mordred from The History of the Kings of Britain and what is their importance?

In the legend of Kind Arthur, Mordred is Arthur's nephew, who is also rumored to be his son. When Arthur is summoned to Rome, Mordred oversees Briton in his stead. He also takes Arthur's wife as his own. Mordred is killed in combat by Arthur, who is also mortally wounded in the battle.
