The Classic tragic tale of two lovers who were denied each other because of the conventions of the day paints a dire tale of human misery. In order to save Heloise from her Uncle it was determined that they should both enter the service of the church as a nun and a monk, effectively separating them from each other, forever. However, Heloise writes to Abelard, saying this: While I am denied your presence, give me at least through your words--of which you have enough and to spare--some sweet semblance of yourself." This is enough to spur him to continue a correspondence with her that lasted decades until their death. They had one child which was given up when they took their holy vows.
