Why did Kurtz try to escape from the steamer?

Kurtz had found his own type of wild peace in living with the 'savages', and he didn't want to return to the confines of Victorian society. It is unclear whether Kurtz was actually delirious and therefore out of his mind (which makes him try to escape), or if he really doesn't want to return to his home country.
